What is a symphony orchestra?

A symphony orchestra is a large ensemble of musicians known for performing classical music. It typically consists of four sections: strings (violins, violas, cellos, double basses), woodwinds (flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons), brass (trumpets, horns, trombones, tubas), and percussion (drums, xylophones, cymbals). Each section contributes distinct sounds and textures, from melodious strings to the resonant brass and rhythmic percussion. Led by a conductor, a symphony orchestra varies in size but usually comprises 70 to over 100 musicians. They play a diverse repertoire, from classical masterpieces to contemporary works, and are a central part of cultural life in many communities.

Regardless of age, all concertgoers must have a ticket, and anyone who causes a disruption to other concertgoers will be asked to leave.

Can I use my phone in concerts?

You might be surprised to hear that we sometimes encourage you to take pictures with your phone, or to participate on social media. Most of the time, though, we’ll ask you to silence your phone before the concert begins. If you aren’t sure, just ask an usher and they’ll be glad to let you know. The best photo opportunities are right before the conductor arrives and immediately following the concert.

Audio and video recording are not allowed at Oregon Symphony concerts out of respect for the performers and your fellow concertgoers.
